Episodes:

  • Champion

Six-time Grammy Award-winning composer Terence Blanchard's operatic retelling of the dramatic story of boxer Emile Griffith arrives at the Met Opera. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green stars as the closeted young hatmaker-turned-prizefighter, who rises from obscurity to become world champion and, in one of the great tragedies in sports history, kills his homophobic archrival in the ring. Yannick Nezet-Seguin leads a stellar cast that also features bass-baritone Eric Owens as Griffith's older self, haunted by the ghosts of his past. Soprano Latonia Moore is Emelda Griffith, the boxer's estranged mother, alongside mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe as bar owner Kathy Hagen. Director James Robinson -- whose productions of Fire and Porgy and Bess brought down the house -- oversees the staging, and Camille A. Brown, whose choreography electrified audiences in Fire and Porgy, also returns.

  • Dead Man Walking

American composer Jake Heggie's masterpiece, the most widely performed new opera of the last 20 years, has its highly anticipated Met premiere, in a haunting new production by Ivo van Hove. Based on Sister Helen Prejea's memoir about her fight for the soul of a condemned murderer, Dead Man Walking matches the high drama of its subject with Heggie's beautiful and poignant music and a brilliant libretto by Terrence McNally. Met Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin takes the podium for this landmark premiere, with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato starring as Sister Helen. The outstanding cast also features bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as the death-row inmate Joseph De Rocher, soprano Latonia Moore as Sister Rose, and legendary mezzo-soprano Susan Graham who sang Helen Prejean in the opera's 2000 premiere as De Rocher's mother.

  • Don Giovanni

Tony-Award-winning director of Broadway's "A View from the Bridge" and "West Side Story," Ivo van Hove makes a major Met debut with a new take on Mozart's tragicomedy, re-setting the familiar tale of deceit and damnation in an abstract architectural landscape and shining a light into the dark corners of the story and its characters. Maestro Nathalie Stutzmann makes her Met debut conducting a star-studded cast led by baritone Peter Mattei as a magnetic Don Giovanni, alongside the Leporello of bass-baritone Adam Plachetka. Sopranos Federica Lombardi, Ana Maria Martinez, and Ying Fang make a superlative trio as Giovanni's conquests--Donna Anna, Donna Elvira and Zerlina--and tenor Ben Bliss is Don Ottavio.

  • Florencia en el Amazonas

Sung in Spanish and inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mexican composer Daniel Catan's 1996 opera tells the enchanting story of an opera diva who returns to her native South America to perform at the legendary opera house of Manaus -- and to search for her lost lover, who has vanished into the jungle. The Met premiere stars soprano Ailyn Perez as Florencia Grimaldi, with Yannick Nezet-Seguin on the podium to lead a spellbinding new production by Mary Zimmerman that brings the mysterious and magical realm of the Amazon to the Met stage. A distinguished ensemble of artists portray the diva's fellow travelers on the river boat to Manaus, including soprano Gabriella Reyes as the journalist Rosalba, bass-baritone Greer Grimsley as the ship's captain, baritone Mattia Olivieri as his enigmatic first mate, tenor Mario Chang as the captain's nephew Arcadio, and mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera and baritone Michael Chioldi as the feuding couple Paula and Alvaro.
