Set in the verdant Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts, the series follows five professional musicians of the Boston Symphony Orchestra over the course of their summer season at Tanglewood: cellist Owen Young, bassoonist Suzanne Nelsen, violist Cathy Basrak, trumpeter Mike Martin and timpanist Tim Genis, as well as assistant conductor Ken-David Masur. Throughout the six episodes, the musicians share their approaches to rehearsal, teaching and coaching at the Tanglewood Music Center, as well as how they manage their careers and family lives. Through one-on-one interviews, social interactions, and extended performance sequences, NEW TANGLEWOOD TALES offers a glimpse into the world of classically trained musicians for a summer sojourn filled with music at Tanglewood.

  • Opening Night

    This episode begins with opening night at Tanglewood and highlights Copland's Lincoln Portrait. It continues with Mike Martin (trumpet) as he produces, plays and conducts an All-Brass Spectacular Concert with the Boston Pops Brass section and two drum corps. Viewers also get a much closer look at Suzanne Nelsen and her bassoon.

  • Tanglewood On Parade

    This episode features a closer look at timpanist Tim Genis—both his musical history and the workings of the timpani. Owen Young (cello) leads a master class with the next generation of students at Boston University Tanglewood Institute, a renowned high school orchestra program, and Owen walks us through one of Tanglewood's most popular summer concerts, "Tanglewood on Parade." Ken David Masur conducts Beethoven Piano Concerto #5 with the Boston Symphony, and violist Cathy Basrak (viola) teaches about her instrument.

  • Beethoven's Ninth, and Beyond

    In this episode, Owen Young (cello) gives a backstage tour and an introduction to the cello. Tim Genis (timpani) takes his daughters golfing, and Cathy Basrak (viola) describes a challenging Mahler concert. Mike Martin (trumpet) introduces his baby which leads to a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Viewers see a performance of the final Tanglewood concert of Beethoven Nine and see the players preparing for their tour of Europe. Violist Cathy Basrak also talks about the orchestra's excitement about Andris Nelsons' appointment as the BSO's Music Director.
