The Hard Road West is a historically accurate re-enactment of the ill-fated Donner Party. This is their story as told by the survivors and recovered diaries. Along the journey, students learn about the dynamics of a wagon train, typical food and clothing, guns and hunting, vegetation and terrain, and interaction with Native Americans. Extensive mapping is used to show the routes west, the path chosen by the Donner party and their progress. The Hard Road West gives students a real sense of the daunting challenges and hardships families endured during the overland journey to the far west.
